Squirrels Living In Your Attic? What You Need To Do To Get Rid Of Them

If you have squirrels living in your attic, you may have heard them running about, or the sounds of them chewing on any given thing, including your home or the nut stash they have brought indoors with them. If you hear a lot of scratching and running about, you may have a family of squirrels in your attic. Having a squirrel family in your attic may sound wonderful if you are a cartoon character, or you live in a fairytale land, but in the real world, these pests are nothing more than that — pests. You need to have them removed by a professional pest control expert, but there may be some things you can do to handle getting rid of them on your own. Read on for some helpful tips.

Seal Your Home

You need to seal the rest of your home off to prevent these pests from invading the rest of your house. Seal attic openings to help ensure they do not come into the main portion of your home if at all possible. Once they get into the rest of your home, they can be very difficult to deal with and you may end up injured or someone else in your home could get injured by these pests. Keep the opening from the outside to the inside available for these pests to be able to come and go, at least for now.

Look For Their Entrance

You need to look around the exterior of your home and keep an eye on where these pests are coming and going. Whether it's an attic vent, a chimney, or a hole in your siding or soffit, you need to pay attention to how they are getting inside. Finding their entrance and watching them come and go will help you determine when they are out so you can repair your home and keep them from coming back inside. Once they are outside, you can seal the entrance, but if they have babies in your home, they will find a way to come back.

Remove Their Entryway

After you have sealed the entrance, you need to remove whatever way they have been using to gain access to your home. If it's a tree limb hanging over your roof, a fence too close to your home, or something else, you need to find a way to remove the entryway so they cannot gain easy access to your home again.

If you have a problem with squirrels in your attic, you need to do what you can to prevent them from getting into your home in the first place. Hire a professional pest control expert to remove these pests from your home. Do not attempt to handle them on your own. For more information on wildlife removal, contact a professional near you.
